What’s your favorite sushi topping? Noripy’s answer is “sea urchin and tuna.” That’s right! This month, we’re featuring Toyosu Market, famous for its tuna auctions. The Toyosu Senkyakubanrai, which opened earlier this year, is also bustling with visitors.
Tuna!
What amazes visitors is the life-sized display of one of the largest tunas ever traded at the market, weighing nearly 500 kilograms. Additionally, in the viewing corridor of the Intermediate Wholesale Building, there’s a tuna illustration on the wall where you can compare its size to your height!
Tuna Auction
Starting at 5:30 a.m., the tuna auction takes place. Every day, many visitors gather to witness it, with a majority coming from overseas. The number of tuna traded varies by day, but seeing over 1,000 tuna lined up at once is truly breathtaking.
Teyari (the method of showing numbers with fingers used in auctions) is also fascinating.
Market Tour
In the visitor corridors of Toyosu Market, enjoy various exhibits. From the turret trucks used by workers for transporting goods at the auction site to panels showcasing the market’s history, you’re sure to discover new insights and experiences. The colorful treasure ship (Takarabune) in the fruit and vegetable market building is an especially impressive sight!
Toyosu Senkyakubanrai and Manyo-no-Yu
This year saw the opening of the commercial facility Senkyakubanrai. Even on Toyosu Market’s non-operating days, this venue remains open, ensuring constant activity and excitement. At the hot spring facility Toyosu Manyo-no-Yu, you can enjoy genuine hot spring water transported from Hakone and Yugawara. The sunset view from the footbath is amazing!
Yurikamome Line: Shijomae Station
If you don’t want to miss the early morning tuna auction, taking a taxi is your best bet. During regular hours, you can easily access the market via the Yurikamome Line or by bus.
Foodie’s Delight!
Every sushi restaurant here serves delicious food. This time, we went for the omakase at Daiwa Zushi in the Vegetable and Fruit Wholesale Building. How was it, you ask?
“Absolutely amazing!” Noripy’s favorite, sea urchin, was included too. Gochisousama!
Foodie, satisfied!
