GONPACHI
What truly stands out at the Nishi-Azabu intersection is “Gonpachi,” an izakaya visited by many celebrities from around the world. It became famous in February 2002 when U.S. President George W. Bush and then–Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi held their “izakaya diplomacy” there. The restaurant also inspired a scene in the movie Kill Bill, and today it is so popular that inbound visitors often form long lines.

Hobbson’s
Right across the intersection from Gonpachi is Hobbson’s, a beloved ice cream spot that’s been a favorite for years. Up on the cozy second floor, you’ll find a great seat with a perfect view of the whole intersection.

Chokokuji Temple
Here at Chōkoku-ji, you can see and pay respects to the impressive 10-meter-tall Azabu Daikannon. It’s a branch of Eiheiji, the main temple of the Sōtō school of Buddhism in Fukui Prefecture. You’ll find it along Roppongi Street heading toward Shibuya, near the intersection with Aoyama Kotto-dori (Antique Street).

Kōgai Elementary School and More
Along Gaien Nishi-dori, we spotted some hardworking cleaners on the wall of the APA Hotel building in Nishi-Azabu.
Nearby, Kōgai Elementary School—which was even visited by the First Lady of Ukraine—is approaching its 120th anniversary. Overlooking the school is the Roppongi Hills complex. Adjacent to the school, Kōgai Park serves as a gathering spot for children and is always filled with cheerful voices.
This area is Nishi-Azabu 3-chome. Even the narrow lanes squeezed between the school walls and hedges have a charming, atmospheric feel.
Azabu is known for its many slopes. If you walk up Ushizaka in Nishi-Azabu 4-chome, it will lead you toward the Shibuya area.

Kaotan Ramen
In Minami-Aoyama, there’s Aoyama Cemetery, but right on the border with Nishi-Azabu 1-chome, you’ll find an old, humble-looking ramen shop. This is the famous Kaotan Ramen—and it’s really tasty!
At Aoyama Cemetery, the autumn leaves were starting to fall, adding a beautiful touch of color to the grounds.

A Foodie’s Delight!
“One bowl really warms you up!” said one of our team members after finishing the hot Yama-toro udon.
