If possible, I’d like to stay overnight, but even as a day trip, Hakone and Nikko top the list of nature-rich destinations with easy access from Tokyo.
This time, I’ll introduce Hakone, sharing a wonderful true story experienced by the Noripy Expedition Team.
Sōunzan
If the weather is clear, you can enjoy refreshing views of the mountains from the terrace of the Sōunzan Station on the ropeway. Soak your feet in the free footbath and let your mind drift as you gaze into the distance.
Lake Ashi and Sightseeing Cruise
The view of Mt. Fuji from the sightseeing cruise is breathtaking; however, due to the area’s tendency for fog, the chance of seeing its majestic form is not necessarily high.
Still, the lush greenery of the mountains and the view of the lake are spectacular enough to be satisfying on their own.
In any case, Hakone offers a variety of transportation experiences, including the mountain railway, cable car, ropeway, buses, and the sightseeing cruise.
Owakudani
Is this hell? A valley with unusual colors, billowing smoke rising constantly, and no leaves on the trees. What on earth is this?!
In fact, this place was once called “Great Hell.” However, when Emperor Meiji visited, it was deemed inappropriate to guide the emperor to a place called “hell,” so the name was changed to Owakudani (Great Boiling Valley).
The Peace Torii of Hakone Shrine
The Peace Torii of Hakone Shrine is a torii gate that appears to float on Lake Ashi. Attracted by its mystical charm, it has become a hugely popular spot, drawing tourists from around the world. If you want to take a photo here, be prepared to wait at least an hour.
It’s the perfect place to make a vow, and one young man proposed to his beloved girlfriend there. Noticing their silhouettes, everyone in the waiting line erupted in applause, forgetting their exhaustion. It was applause filled with blessings.
The young couple were actually part of the Noripy tour. Overwhelmed by emotion, Noripy shed tears of joy.
Narukawa Art Museum
The view of Lake Ashi from Narukawa Art Museum is breathtaking. It’s the same scenery that appears on NHK’s weather news. You can also see the Peace Torii of Hakone Shrine.
At the museum café, you can order a special beer that, when poured against the stunning backdrop, takes the shape of Mt. Fuji.
